Preliminary Site activities

Preliminary site activities occurs when a builder takes possession of a building site, it is usually provided with a site layout plan and the important drainage necessary for the erection of the building.

Having the site taken over, the task for preparing for(preliminary) and setting out the building can be started. Taking over the site includes having the provision of access road necessary for the site to allow the movement of men, materials, and machines to the site.

SITE ACTIVITIES THAT PRECEDE ACTUAL BUILDING CONSTRUCTION.

The following activities precede actual building construction on site.

• Provision of access road(necessary)
• Site Clearance/clearing.
• Site offices and Storage facilities should be provided.
• Provision of Site Services.

Now, out of these Four major site activites that precede the actual construction of a building that i have listed out, i am going to explain two for today, so keep in touch on the next update.

SITE CLEARANCE
The preliminary works on a construction project site usually begin after the site facilities have been set up completely. Clearing the site is important and essential.

First, the Vegetation such as bushes and shrubs should be removed.

Tree roots and weeds must be dug out completely and cleared away.

Site Clearance may also involve the demolition of existing structures and buildings; Demolition is a very skilled required occupation, and should be tackled by experts in that area.

The top soil should also be removed, up to a depth of at least one hundred and fifty millimeters, to remove any plant life and rotting or decaying vegetables.

The presence of vegetation and decaying materials on a site to be used for construction, means that the top soil is easily compressible and cannot support building foundations durably.

Top soil is however valuable as a top dressing for gardens and may be disposed of in this manner.

So that is that for Site Clearance, lets move to 'Provision of site Facilities'.

PROVISION OF SITE FACILITIES

A well managed site should definitely have facilities and usable services which will make the site functional and adequately convenient.

On a building construction site, the following facilities and services are to be provided.

• Temporary Services: These include the provision of such services like water supply (of cause; no man can do without water ehh). Water is required for drinking and for the works to be done.

• Electricity Supply: is essential. An electrical supply for power tools can be supplied from the mains or petrol generator.

• Site Accommodation : a site should have an office and sheds for the workers on site to change their clothes/ dresses, and to take rest on site during breaks from work, they can also have their meals here.
